4th-Ranked Tampa Evens Series with Bentley Behind Strong Pitching

TAMPA, Fla. – Senior Eric Luksis (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and junior Mike Adams (Spring Hill, Fla.), a pair of lefties, combined on a one-hit shutout as Tampa University, the fourth-ranked team in Division II, evened its series with visiting Bentley University with a 6-0 win Saturday night at the UT Baseball Field.

Luksis pitched the first six innings and allowed only four base runners while striking out five. Three of those came in his final inning when Bentley had its only hit, a single through the right side by freshman DH Drew Nick (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union HS).

Nick led off the inning with the hit and was replaced on base when junior Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) hit into a fielder's choice. Keady stole second, and the Falcons loaded the bases on a walk and a fielder's choice that didn't retire anyone. That brought junior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS), who had hit a grand slam during Bentley's 5-3 win Friday night, with two out, but Luksis was able to get the Falcon clean-up hitter to fly out to end the threat and the inning.

Luksis was staked to an early lead when senior first baseman Jake Schrader (San Antonio, Fla.) delivered a three-run homer down the left field line.

It remained a 3-0 game until the Spartans picked up an insurance run in the seventh and tacked on two more in the eighth. Schrader doubled and scored in the seventh for Tampa, which finished with ten hits.

Senior righty Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School), the second of three Bentley pitchers, was the most effective as he allowed only three hits and one run in four innings.

The rubber game of the three-game season-opening series will be played at 2 pm Sunday.
