Rollins Tops Bentley, 7-4, Despite 3 Hits Apiece from Muir & Gillis

WALTHAM, Mass. – Rollins College junior left fielder Brandon Curson (Woodstock, Ga.) broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning and the Tars went on to a 7-4 non-conference win over Bentley University in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

After Bentley scored a pair in the bottom of the seventh to even the contest, it didn't take long for the visitors from Florida to regain the lead. Senior first baseman Kevin Mager (Middletown, N.J.) led off the eighth with a double to right center and senior catcher Sean Reilly (Westwood) drew a walk to set the stage for Curson.

Later in the inning, junior right fielder Boston Langley (Edmonton, Alb.) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Reilly with Rollins' sixth run. The Tars picked up insurance in the ninth on a grounder to short by sophomore center fielder Zach Persky (Solon, Ohio).

The Falcons, who came in with a three-game winning streak, got off to a strong start with two runs in the bottom of the first. Consecutive singles by freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater/ Xaverian Bros. HS), junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) and senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) set the table, and senior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) followed with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0.

Rollins got one back in the next half inning, Mager drawing a lead-0ff walk and scoring on a grounder to short by Langley.

The game turned around in the fifth when Rollins scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. Junior third baseman Anthony Figliola (Winter Springs, Fla.) had a game-tying RBI double and after a strikeout, sophomore center fielder Zach Persky (Solon, Ohio) slammed a two-run double that broke a 2-2 tie.

Bentley drew even with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, doing all the damage after two were out. Muir and Gillis got things started, with back-to-back singles chasing starter Adam Ogburn (Panama City, Fla.). Senior Mike Howard (Norwalk, Conn.) came in from the bullpen and his first offering was driven into left by Korwek for an RBI single.

Howard kept the Falcons off the scoreboard the rest of the way, striking out three over the final two innings to notch his fourth win in six decisions.

Bentley's 11-hit attack included three apiece by Muir and Gillis, who both scored twice. Korwek and Johnson each had two as the four batters combined for 10 of the 11. The rest of the lineup was just 1 of 19.

Mager and Curson each had two hits for the Tars (24-16), and Persky finished with three RBI.

Bentley is back on DeFelice Field Wednesday for a 3:30 pm Northeast-10 Northeast Division game against Merrimack.
