Finneran Named Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University grad student Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS) has been named the Pitcher of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference after an outstanding performance in a 3-1 win over nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.

Facing the sixth-ranked team in Division II, Finneran authored a three-hitter and struck out a career-high 13, the most by a Bentley pitcher in 11 years. After giving up a first-inning run, he retired 26 of the last 28 batters he faced, including 18 in a row from the first through the seventh innings.

The right-hander walked only one while recording his 19th career win, tying for second most in the program's history, and did not allow a hit in seven at bats with runners on base.

Finneran, who missed the 2011 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery, has come back strong this spring, amassing a 6-3 record with a 2.51 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 64.2 innings. Opposing hitters are batting just .220 against him, and he has a 2.02 ERA when pitching against East Region opposition.

Finneran, a second-team All-Conference honoree in 2009 and a third-team All-NE-10 pick in 2010, owns the Bentley career records for ERA (2.92), winning percentage (19-8, .704) and strikeouts (216), which he set earlier this season.

Putting his won-loss record into perspective, Bentley's winning percentage during the three seasons that Finneran has pitched and hasn't received the decision is .473.

This week's Northeast-10 Weekly Honor roll included Bentley designated hitter/catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS). During a 4-1 week that included four wins in four NE-10 divisional games, Baggett scored five runs and drove in five while hitting .294 (5-17) and slugging .588. After having a two-run homer in a 12-4 win against Stonehill and a two-run single in a 6-5 victory against Southern New Hampshire, he had the game-tying double in the 9th inning of the third game against SNHU, minutes before scoring the winning run to give the Falcons the three-game sweep.

Baggett is hitting .279 and slugging .533 with six homers and 23 RBI.

This week's schedule for the 22-19 Falcons has home games against Rollins Tuesday and Merrimack Wednesday before a three-game weekend set at St. Michael's.
