WALTHAM, Mass. – Ten straight batters reached and scored after two were out in the top of the fifth and Tufts University went on to a 15-4 non-conference win over Bentley University in college baseball action Thursday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

The lengthy top of the fifth saw the Jumbos (16-8) accumulate ten of their 18 hits and receive two RBI apiece from freshman center fielder Connor McDavitt (Holden), junior designated hitter Matt Collins (Hopkinton) and sophomore left fielder Nick Izzo (Saunderstown, R.I.). Freshman catcher Nick Barker (Weymouth) began the attack with a two-out single and later singled and scored again in the inning.

The 10-run explosion came a half inning after Bentley scored its only runs of the afternoon, with the Falcons' four hits in the contest coming in a stretch of five batters.

Just like Tufts in the fifth, all the damage was done after two were out. Senior Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) singled to right center, senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) followed with a double to center, and right fielder Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) walked to load the bases.

Junior Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) singled through the left side, driving in Korwek, and Baggett was safe on the play when he knocked the ball from the catcher's glove following a perfect throw from left. Sophomore shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) followed with a two-run double to right, making it a 4-0 Falcon lead.

Tufts scored its other five runs in the sixth inning, with the Falcons committing four errors in the frame. Two of the runs scored on a single by freshman third baseman Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, Calif.).

All told, the Jumbos sent 24 runners to the plat in the two back-to-back innings, and at one stretch, 15 of 16 reached with all but one scoring.

Sophomore second baseman Tom Mitropoulos (Winchester) had a team-high three hits for Tufts, and five of his teammates had two hits. Sophomore righty Josh Manning (Upton), the third of seven Jumbo pitchers, was credited with the win following a scoreless fifth inning.

Bentley, 19-19, will begin a three-game weekend series with Southern New Hampshire Friday at 3:30. The two clubs will also meet Saturday in a 12 noon doubleheader, with all three being played at DeFelice Field.
