4 Hits by Fratus Helps Stonehill Take Down Bentley, 9-5

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore second baseman Dan Fratus (Plymouth) led off a three-run second inning with the first of his four singles and Stonehill College went on to register a 9-5 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Wednesday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Stonehill, with its third win of the season over the Falcons, improved to 22-10 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast Division. Bentley saw its winning streak halted at two and dropped to 17-16 overall (2-4 Northeast).

The afternoon started out on a promising note for the Falcons with sophomore left fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) leading off the first with a single to right. After advancing to second on a passed ball, he scored the game's first run on a double to left by junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H../Lawrence Academy).

The RBI was the ninth in the last four games for Gillis, who stretched his hitting streak to eight and finished 3-for-5.

The Falcons' only lead of the game proved to be short-lived as the Skyhawks struck for three in the top of the second. Fratus singled, sophomore right fielder Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I.) walked and senior DH Steven Popp (Unionville, Conn.) delivered a bloop single to right that plated Fratus with the tying run. Senior left fielder Michael Magnusson (Carver) bunted the next pitch for a base hit, with the throw on the play sailing well past first base, allowing both Karalis and Popp to score.

Stonehill made it a 5-1 game in the third. Senior first baseman Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch.

The rest of the afternoon was spent with Bentley attempting to close the gap and each time, Stonehill countering with a run or two of its own. The Falcons scored one in the third and one in the fifth to close within two at 5-3.  After the Skyhawks answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh, Bentley again got within two with a two-run seventh.  That was again matched with the visitors scoring twice in their next at bat.

Bentley's 11 hits featured three by Gillis, who boosted his average to .333. Keady, freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater/Xaverian Bros. ) and senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) each had two hits with Korwek picking up two RBI and Muir scoring three times.

Nine different Skyhawks combined for 16 hits, including three by Magnusson and two from White and Popp (3 RBI).

Senior lefty Eric Haughn (Pembroke) pitched into the seventh for Stonehill to earn his fourth win in five decisions. He allowed nine hits and five runs (three earned), before giving way to freshman Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I.) for the save. He escaped the seventh with a pick-off, and gave up just one hit over the final two innings.

Bentley will play a three-game series at nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce over the weekend, beginning with a noon Saturday doubleheader.
