11-Run 1st Inning Propels Bentley to 19-15 Win in Highest-Scoring Game in DeFelice Field History

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) and sophomore shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) each drove in three during an 11-run first inning and Bentley University went on to a 19-15 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference non-divisional baseball Tuesday afternoon.

The highest scoring game in the 11-year history of DeFelice Field saw the two teams combine for 15 runs in the first inning and 34 in total, in addition to 39 hits, 17 walks, eight errors, 370 pitches and 109 plate appearances.  The 19 runs was Bentley's highest total in 204 games, dating back to March 2008.

Seven different Falcons had multiple hits, with Brennan leading the way with four. He also finished with four RBI, and both Gillis and grad student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) (two hits, three walks) scored four times for Bentley, which improved to 17-15 overall and 17-8 against NCAA Division II East Regional opposition.

Bentley faced an early 4-0 deficit, but that was erased before there were two outs in the bottom of the first. Gillis had an RBI single after a pair of walks, senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand HS) had a sacrifice fly, Brennan had an RBI single and junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) delivered a two-run single to left center to put the Falcons in front.

The huge inning continued with freshman third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) picking up an RBI on a ground out. Feshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater/ Xaverian Bros. HS) drove in a run with an infield single, Gillis doubled in two runs and Brennan had a two-run single through the right side to cap the scoring.

Assumption erupted for six runs in the third to draw within two at 12-10, but Bentley added to its lead with two in the third and four in the fourth making it 18-10. Korwek and Baggett had RBI singles in the third, and the fourth featured a two-run homer by senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/ East Bridgewater HS), his second of the spring.

After the Greyhounds (6-16 after dropping their 11th straight) pulled within three at 18-15 midway through the seventh. Bentley tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of that inning. Gillis walked, Johnson singled through the right side and Korwek brought in Gillis from second with a single to left.

Freshman Billy Sullivan (Carver/Carver HS) was credited with his first career win following three innings of scoreless relief. He gave up a single to the first batter he faced, allowing one of his two inherited runners to score, but allowed only three singles the rest of the way with three strikeouts, all looking.

In addition to Brennan's four hits, the list of Falcons with more than one hits included Rey with three and five with two (Muir, Gillis, Johnson, Korwek, Baggett).

Assumption, which outhit the Falcons 20-19, saw NE-10 batting leader Shane Keddy (Worcester) and senior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I.) both have four hits and three RBI.  Keddy's day boosted his average to a lofty .444.

Bentley is back in action Wednesday with a 3:30 NE-10 Northeast Division game against Stonehill.
