Croteau, Gillis Lead Bentley Past Saint Anselm, 4-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior right-hander Jeff Croteau (Auburn/Auburn HS) posted his third consecutive complete game victory and junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./ Lawrence Academy) ignited a three-run eighth with a double to right as Bentley University rallied for a 4-2 Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division win over Saint Anselm College in college baseball Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Bentley, which had been limited to two runs in the first 25 innings of the three-game series, faced a 2-1 deficit entering the bottom of the eighth. Gillis led off the inning with his fifth double of the spring and raced home with the tying run on a single to center by grad student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS).

Following a pitching change, senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) greeted reliever Timothy Cooney (East Bridgewater) with a single to center, putting runners on the corners. Korwek stole second and sophomore shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) hit a sacrifice fly to left, sending in Johnson from third with the go-ahead run. Following an intentional walk, an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) made it a 4-2 game.

Croteau, 3-1 on the season, retired the Hawks in order in the ninth to lock up the victory. He scattered eight hits, struck out four and didn't issue a walk while lowering his ERA to 2.08.

Bentley, 6-2 in its last eight games and 12-4 since March 11, picked up the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth. Junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School), who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored from first on a triple to deep right by senior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS).

The lead was short-lived as the Hawks (10-14-1, 2-1-1 Northeast) quickly struck for two in their next at-bat. Sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) came in from third on a successful squeeze put down by junior center fielder Andrew Chandler (Westford). Senior third baseman Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to put Saint Anselm up 2-1.

Bentley, 14-13 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast Division, outhit the Hawks 11-8 with Gillis, Korwek, Baggett and Witkowski all having two hits for the Falcons.

Bentley is right back in action Tuesday with a 3:30 pm game at Stonehill College.
