Johnson, Ashline Lead Bentley to 6-3 Win over Assumption after Falcons Fall Earlier to Saint Anselm

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Graduate student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford HS) homered and drove in three runs during a three-hit afternoon and junior righty JP Ashline (Clinton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief as Bentley University topped Assumption College, 6-3, in non-conference college baseball Saturday at Alfond Stadium, on the campus of Rollins College.

Earlier Saturday, the Falcons surrendered four first-inning runs to Saint Anselm College and dropped a 10-3 decision to the Hawks.

Johnson's homer, the first as a collegian for the former quarterback, cleared the right field fence and evened the game at 2-2 in the third inning.

In the fourth, the Falcons regained the lead, one it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Senior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) led off with a triple to right center, and scored the go-ahead run on a single to left by senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS). Following a sacrifice, senior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./ Tyngsboro HS) delivered a single to center, driving in Korwek with the Falcons' fourth run.

Bentley picked up a couple insurance runs in the seventh inning. Freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) reached on a bunt single to third, stole second and scored on a throwing error.  Later in the frame, Johnson picked up an RBI single.

Ashline took over with two out and two on in the top of the fifth, with Bentley on top 4-2 at the line. He surrendered an RBI single to the first batter he faced, but kept the Greyhounds (0-2) off the scoreboard the rest of the way to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed just three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Assumption had its best chance against him in the seventh when it loaded the bases with two outs on an error, a single and a walk.  Junior left fielder Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass.) worked the count full before Ashline caught him looking for strike three.

Korwek was the only Falcon other than Johnson to have more than one hit as he was two-for-four.

All three Bentley runs against Saint Anselm came in the bottom of the ninth. Johnson picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded ground-out and sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./ Malden Catholic HS) followed with a two-run single.

Six of Saint Anselm's runs were unearned as the Hawks took advantage of four Falcon miscues.  The Hawks (4-7) homered twice with junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) hitting his second in the fourth and sophomore catcher Mike DeSimone (Southwick, Mass.) his first in the eighth.  Both were solo shots.

Junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) led Bentley with three hits, and Baggett had a pair.

Bentley, 2-8, will be back at Alfond on Sunday for an 11 am meeting with Assumption.
