Five-Run Second Propels Rollins to 10-4 Win over Bentley

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Six scoreless innings from freshman lefty Brett Mueller (Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.) and a five-run second-inning that featured a two-run double by senior shortstop Nick Adams (Orlando, Fla.) propelled Rollins College to a 10-4 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Thursday night at Alfond Stadium.

Bentley (0-4) had a season-high ten hits in the game, including three from junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) and two apiece from outfielders Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) and Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS).

The Falcons, who led off five of the first seven innings with a base hit, had the chance to jump out early, but Mueller was able to strand the bases loaded in both the first and second.

After being retired 1-2-3 in the first inning, Rollins launched its big second-inning with a one-out single by senior catcher Sean Reilly (Westwood, Mass.). That was followed by a walk, three straight infield singles, Adams' two-run double to left and a sacrifice fly by sophomore center fielder Zach Persky (Solon, Ohio).

Rollins scored in the next three innings as well, with a three-run fourth sandwiched around single tallies in the third and fifth. The fourth inning included a two-run single up the middle from Reilly.

All four of Bentley's runs came in the seventh inning after Mueller was lifted from the game. Sophomore center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) drew a one-out walk, senior DH Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) singled to left, and one batter later, Rey singled to center, driving home Keady from second.

Lane followed with an RBI single, Rey scored on a wild pitch and Johnson doubled home Lane. Senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS), who had walked, tried to follow Lane across the plate but was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Mueller, in his six shutout innings, scattered five hits and three walks while striking out two Falcons. Sophomore Dante Padovani (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield HS) was the most effective of three Bentley pitchers as he limited the Tars (4-3) to two hits and one run in four innings of relief.  He walked two and fanned five in his first collegiate appearance off the mound.

Rollins' 11 hits included a three-for-three effort from junior third baseman Anthony Figliolia (Winter Springs, Fla.).

This was the first of a four-game set between the two clubs with game two scheduled for 6 pm Friday.
