Jones Drives in Three as #2 Tampa Blanks Bentley, 8-0

TAMPA, Fla. – Junior center fielder Andrew Jones (Doylestown, Ohio) had two hits, a run scored and three RBI as the University of Tampa, the number two-ranked Division II team in the country preseason, posted an  8-0 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Saturday night at the UT Baseball Field.

For the second straight night, a trio of Spartan pitchers combined to blank the Falcons, with junior right-hander Ben Brown (Winter Haven, Fla.) credited with the victory after four innings of four-hit pitching. He walked one and fanned four before giving way to junior Mike Zaccardo (Greenwich, Conn.), who pitched two no-hit innings, and senior Evan Stobbs (Myakka City, Fla.), who pitched the final three to record the save.

Tampa (2-0) received the only run it would need in the bottom of the first when junior shortstop Anthony Caronia (Orlando, Fla.) led off with a double to left and scored on a two-out single up the middle by third baseman Eric Grabe (Ocala, Fla.).

Bentley had its best scoring opportunity of the game in the top of the second.  Senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) hit a two-out single to left center, sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) followed with a single to right, and both moved up 90 feet on a wlld pitch. However, they were left there on Brown's second strikeout of the inning.

Tampa added two runs in the second and one more in the fifth before breaking the game open with a four-spot , off of just one hit, in the eighth.  That one was a two-RBI single by Jones, who later scored the game's final run on a balk.

Senior lefty Blaine McLean (Medford, Mass./Cushing Academy) was the most effective of three Bentley pitchers.  He tossed the middle three and gave up two hits and one run.

The two teams complete their season-opening series Sunday morning at 11 am.
