Hill & Lirange Named Bentley’s Outstanding Senior Athletes; Hyland Recipient of Powers Award

WALTHAM, Mass. – Football’s Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) and field hockey’s Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS), both of whom received All-America recognition in their respective sports, were named the Outstanding Senior Athletes at Bentley University Monday night during a Division of Student Affairs awards program in the Dana Center’s Carleton Room.

In addition, men’s basketball standout Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) was presented with the Edward J. Powers Scholar Athlete Award as Bentley’s premier senior scholar-athlete. The award, given annually since 1965, is named after the late president of the old Boston Garden, an alumnus and trustee of Bentley.

The six-foot-four Hill had an impressive career for the Falcons, one that saw him earn first-team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors four straight years and become only the third receiver in program history to amass 200 receptions. Named a second-team Division II All-America by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, finished his career ranking number three in Bentley history in receptions, receiving yards (3,489), TD catches (37) and all-purpose running yards (3,496), as well as fourth in scoring (224 points).

During the 2014 season, Hill led the conference in receiving yards (1,113), yards per game (101.2) and touchdown catches (12) while averaging 16.4 yards per reception. He was in the top 20 nationally in Division II in several categories and finished in the top 15 in receiving yards per game for the third straight year.

Hill’s senior year included five 100-yard games, with a high of 163 at Merrimack in his final contest in a Bentley uniform, and four games with two touchdowns.

Lirange, Bentley’s leading scorer for the second straight year, was chosen as a Longstreth/ National Field Hockey Coaches Association second-team Division II All-America after the 2014 season. Three of her ten goals were game-winners, and she also had six assists for a total of 26 points.

A two-year captain, Lirange was twice selected to the All-Northeast-10 first team and was an Academic All-Northeast-10 honoree for the third consecutive year. She never missed a game during her four seasons and finished with 33 goals and 15 assists for 81 points.

Lirange also excels in the classroom, having earned a grade point average over 3.8 while majoring in accountancy.

Hyland has been impressive on the court for the Falcons over the last two seasons and was selected to the All-Northeast-10 third team following this past season after filling the stat sheet with 19 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game. That’s a combination never before achieved in more than 50 years of Bentley basketball.

The six-foot-four guard has been even more impressive in the classroom, compiling a sparking grade point average of 3.93 while majoring in finance. Hyland was one of just five players from Division II to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-America® men’s basketball first team, becoming Bentley’s first men’s basketball Academic All-America in 35 years, and was also selected as the Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award winner for men’s basketball.

Hyland, who’ll return for his final year of eligibility next year, owns career averages of 16.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
